Blue Ridge Broadcasting Finalizes Purchase of Knoxville, Tenn., Radio Station
Acquisition Complements the Billy Graham-founded Ministry's Presence in Eastern Tennessee
ASHEVILLE, N.C, March 29, 2012 – Blue Ridge Broadcasting, Inc. (BRB) of Asheville, N.C., has finalized the purchase of WRJK-FM, Norris, Tenn., from South Central Communications, Inc., adding 106.7 The Light to its broadcast reach.
This transaction marks BRB’s first radio acquisition in 49 years. BRB was founded in 1962 by Billy Graham and his wife, Ruth. BRB’s flagship station, 106.9 The Light (WMIT), Black Mountain, N.C., was purchased in 1963 and currently has the 12th largest FM coverage area in the U.S., including parts of eastern Tennessee.
“We’re beyond delighted at how the Lord opened this opportunity to share the hope of Jesus Christ through music, messages, and relationships via 106.7 The Light. Our team is humbled, even a little amazed, at the number of folks who’ve gone out of their way to welcome us to their hometown,” said Jim Kirkland, Director of Radio for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the parent organization of Blue Ridge Broadcasting. “Over the years, our founder Billy Graham, and Franklin Graham, have reached thousands in the Knoxville area for Christ. That’s helped provide 106.7 The Light the blessing of a warm welcome.”
Both Billy Graham and his son Franklin held well-received events in the city. Mr. Graham led a 1970 crusade at the University of Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium. In 2008, Franklin Graham hosted a similar event at UT’s Thompson-Boling Arena.
WRJK-FM broadcasts on 106.7 MHz with a power of 1.1 kW. Its antenna sits 751 feet above average terrain in northern Knox County.
