106.9 the Light, Volunteers to Hold “Sharathon” Oct. 6-7
Despite Slow Economy, Radio Ministry Trusts Needs Will Be Met for Upcoming Year
September 28, 2009 -- Approximately 100 volunteers of 106.9 the Light will be donating their time and energy on October 6 and 7 to help the Christian radio station during its annual “Sharathon” fund drive. The goal: $1.8 million for the station’s ministry efforts in 2010, the majority of which will be raised in two days.
“All year long, almost every day, listeners tell us stories of how God uses something on 106.9 the Light to speak to their hearts,” said Jim Kirkland, executive director of 106.9 the Light. “Sharathon is an opportunity for our listeners to make that life-changing work through radio possible.”
While noting the economy is a challenge for many, Kirkland believes listeners will continue to give because of the value the station provides. “In these tight times, it’s humbling to see people continue to support what they see making a positive, Christ-centered difference in their life, their families’ life, and around the world,” he said. “Our team is praying that our listeners see the powerful role they can have in other peoples’ lives when they give to 106.9 the Light.”
Though most visibly a radio station, 106.9 the Light is primarily a ministry that seeks to serve listeners through the message of the gospel. Through encouraging music and relevant Bible teaching, as well its support of worthwhile efforts here and abroad, 106.9 the Light proclaims the message that hope is ultimately found only through knowing Jesus Christ.
The station often sponsors events to encourage people in their Christian faith and welcomes many Christian concerts to Charlotte and western North Carolina. It also uses its airwaves to support worthy causes, such as collections for local ministries, shoebox collections for Operation Christmas Child, and on-air fundraisers for foreign projects. The station recently held a “Day of Hope” for Rutherford County in August, broadcasting its morning show from there and encouraging residents with a free concert, after learning the Associated Press indicated it was one of the most economically depressed counties in the nation.
Ten percent of all proceeds raised from Sharathon will go to its sister station reaching Arabic-speakers in North Africa and the Middle East with the love of Jesus.
