The reason Jesus didn’t flee but allowed Himself to be arrested and killed is because He came into the world for one purpose: to become the final and complete sacrifice for our sins.
You see, our greatest spiritual problem is our sin. Sin isn’t just misbehaving; sin is like a deadly disease in our souls. It deceives us into thinking we don’t need God and can solve our problems on our own. Sin is also a destroyer. It has destroyed our relationship with God, and it also destroys God’s plan for our lives. It has also destroyed our hope of eternal life. The Bible warns us that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). Don’t ever underestimate the destructiveness of sin!
But Jesus Christ came to break sin’s hold over us. He is the only cure for our disease of sin! How is this possible? It is possible because He willingly took upon Himself the judgment and hell we deserve. We deserve to die for our sins—but on the cross all our sins were placed on Him, and He died in our place. Now we have hope—hope of forgiveness and hope of salvation.
Yes, Jesus might have helped some people if He had continued living—but by His death He helps every person who believes in Him. During this Easter season may you become one of them, as you turn in faith to Christ and ask Him to come into your life.
