Q:

What does it mean to believe in Jesus? One of my friends says I need to believe in Jesus but I think I already do that. Am I missing something?

A:

To believe in Jesus doesn’t just mean to believe that He existed, or that He was a great person whose life and teachings have made a deep impact on the world.

Nor does believing in Jesus even mean that we acknowledge He was more than a mere man, but was the Son of God who came from heaven to save us from our sins. All of these things are true — but they aren’t enough to save us from our sins. Even the devil believes all these things about Jesus — but that doesn’t make him a Christian! The Bible says, “Even the demons believe that — and shudder” (James 2:19).

To believe in Jesus, the Bible says, is to commit our lives to Him and to trust Him totally and completely for our salvation. I might believe in my mind that a bridge over a deep gorge will hold me if I walk over it — but I only really believe it when I actually do something about it, by committing myself to it and walking across it. The same is true with Jesus.

My prayer is that you will commit yourself to Jesus Christ and trust Him alone as your Savior and Lord. By a simple prayer of faith invite Him to come into your life today. The Bible’s promise is for you: “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). Don’t miss out on God’s plan for your life, but trust Christ and become His follower — beginning today.
