Q:

I've never made any New Year's resolutions before, because I knew I wouldn't keep them. But several months ago I committed my life to Jesus. Now that I'm a believer, what would be some good resolutions for me to make as I begin a new year?

A:

First of all, I’m thankful you committed your life to Christ recently; it’s the most important decision you will ever make. You are now God’s child, and some day you will go to be with Him in heaven forever. Never forget the Bible’s promise: “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son” (1 John 5:11).

But God wants to bless you right now, and the most important resolution you can make is to walk with God every day. The Christian faith isn’t just a set of beliefs or a list of rules — it’s a personal relationship with the living God! He is now your Heavenly Father, and you are now His child. And just as children want to be with their earthly father, experiencing his love and learning from his wisdom, so your Heavenly Father wants you to be with Him, experiencing His love and learning from His wisdom.

How does this happen? It happens first of all as you listen to God speak to you through His Word, the Bible. It happens, too, as you pray, thanking God for His goodness and sharing your deepest concerns with Him. It happens also as you get to know other believers and learn from their experience with Christ.

Set aside time to be alone with God every day. It may be only a few minutes at first, but they’ll set the tone for your whole day. The Bible says, “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).

You can know Jesus today.
