Q:

Are some people just naturally religious? If so, I must not be one of them. Faith is a struggle for me, and no matter how hard I try to be spiritually-minded, I just don't seem to be able to make it.

A:

Perhaps some people do sense their need of God more than others, or they may have grown up in a family that encouraged their spiritual development.

But this doesn’t guarantee their faith will be stronger than anyone else’s. Nor is it an excuse for ignoring God or shutting Him out of our lives. We are all different — and God knows this, and He’ll meet us wherever we are. Peter found it easy to believe in Jesus; he was the first to speak up when Jesus asked His disciples if they finally understood who He was (see Matthew 16:16). But Thomas found it much harder to believe, refusing to accept what others said about Jesus’ resurrection, and only coming to faith after Jesus appeared to him (see John 20:28).

Don’t be discouraged; God has put within you a desire to know Him, and He wants to fill you with Himself. The person who’s in the gravest spiritual danger is the one who feels no need of God. Jesus’ promise is for you: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7).

Turn to Christ and by faith ask Him to come into your life. Then take time to draw strength from Him every day — reading the Bible, turning to Him in prayer, seeking fellowship with other believers. The Bible says, “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (Romans 10:17).
