Q:

I thought our money problems would go away as time passed, but they haven't. Thankfully we both have jobs, but we still can't seem to get out of debt. I know this isn't a spiritual question, but would you have any advice?

A:

Let me assure you that God is concerned about every area of our lives, including our finances. In fact, you’d probably be surprised how often the Bible talks about money, and our responsibility to use it wisely.

I’m sure almost any financial advisor would give you the same advice I would: Put down your income and your expenses on a sheet of paper, then prepare a balanced budget you can live with. That will probably mean cutting out some expenses you wish you could keep, but you’ll never overcome your debts until you do. Develop a realistic budget, then stick to it, regardless of the inconvenience.

The real question you must face, however, is this: What place does money have in your lives? Is it more important to you than God? I know that’s a blunt question, but most of us have become too concerned with material things, and we could live far simpler than we actually do. Jesus warned, “You cannot serve both God and money” (Luke 16:13).

This is why the most important thing you can do is put Christ at the center of your lives, including your finances. God has blessed you in many ways; almost every day I get a letter from someone who’s without a job or struggling far more than you are. Thank God for all He has given you, then ask Him to help you not only live within your income, but also to use your money wisely and for His glory.

Robert I pray the Lord will lead you to a job. Sue I agree with the tithing, my husband is unsaved so I tithe the money I receive. My husband had a severe motorcycle wreck over a year ago. This has caused me to become serious about paying off debt. I look at my life and realize I have wasted money on pleasures. We by Gods Grace have cut out most unnecessary spending and if I keep my mind on God this doesn’t bother me. I didn’t realize how much of our confidence came through money and things. Realizing we didn’t get here overnight and we are not going to get out of it overnight helps too. I also am asking myself what do I really need and the answer is not a whole lot because all my needs are met, its my wants that aren’t. I hope to learn that money is given by God to help others and that by not selfish I can be a blessing to those who have needs.

It has also been financially hard for my husband and I, but I have found that if I tithes to the Lord every time I get paid then there is no financial problems. I know it sounds hard but try to tithe to the Lord each time you get any pay. I also have found if I have extra change to save it and before you know it I have extra money to pay the bills. Remember if Jesus will feed the birds and animals of nature He will see us though also. God Bless You!
