Q:

Now that you're older, how do you spend your time? I know you aren't preaching, but are you doing other things? I've just retired, and I'm beginning to wonder what I'm going to do with so much time on my hands.

A:

One of my biggest surprises as I’ve grown older is that everything seems to take more time — because I don’t have the energy I used to have. A friend alerted me to this reality many years ago, and I’ve discovered it’s true.

Perhaps this is why I never seem to have enough time to get everything done I want to do! It’s true that I no longer preach (although I’m being urged to videotape a sermon that could be carried worldwide over the Internet). But I continue to write as much as I’m able; my latest book (which deals with the challenges of growing older from the Bible’s viewpoint) has just been sent to the publisher. I also enjoy times of Bible study and prayer, as well as opportunities to encourage younger evangelists.

Don’t waste your retirement years, but take them as a gift that God has given you to help others. Does your church have programs that need volunteers? Would service agencies in your community profit from your experience? Ask God to guide you and show you ways you can make your retirement count for Christ. The Bible says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).

These can be some of the best years of your life, if you will commit them to God. But remember: some day they’ll come to an end, and you will enter eternity to face God. Are you ready for that day? Make sure of your eternal salvation by giving your life to Christ.
