Q:

My friends talk a lot about their ideas about God, but how can I know if what they're saying is true? Sometimes they don't even agree with each other, and that confuses me even more.

A:

Did it ever occur to you that God wants you to know the truth about Himself? He does — and that’s why I urge you to turn to Him and listen to what He has to say, instead of just listening to your friends’ ideas and opinions.

How can you listen to what God wants to say to you? The key is to go to the place where He has spoken to us — and that “place” is the Bible. The Bible is God’s Word, and through it He tells us about Himself and how we can come to know Him. From one end of the Bible to the other, God reveals Himself to us. Let the Psalmist’s prayer also be yours: “Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me” (Psalm 43:3).

Most of all, the Bible tells us about Jesus Christ — for He was God in human flesh. Do you want to know what God is like? Look at Jesus Christ — and when you do, you will realize that God loves you and wants to come into your life. Only Jesus — the divine Son of God — could say, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6).

If you’ve never read the Bible, I suggest you begin with the Gospel of John. As you read, ask God to show you the truth — about Himself, about Jesus, and about His love for you. Then respond to God’s love by repenting of your sins and committing your life to Jesus Christ. God bless you.
