Q:

I realize religion is a great comfort to some people, and I'm glad it is. However, I don't feel any need for that kind of emotional support, so why should I bother getting involved in my girlfriend's church (which she keeps wanting me to do)?

A:

Have you ever asked yourself why your girlfriend keeps urging you to get involved in her church? She may have several reasons, but one, I strongly suspect, is because she knows you actually do need God. In reality, we all need God, even if we don’t realize it or admit it.

We need Him first of all because He knows what is best for us. We plan our lives and think we’re on the right road, but are we really? Look around you; how many people do you see who are really happy and at peace? How many instead are living lives of misery or unhappiness because of bad decisions they’ve made? God knows what’s best for us, and life’s greatest joy comes from knowing Christ and walking with Him every day.

We need God also because only He can take away the sin and selfishness that poison our lives and cause chaos in our relationships. Right now, you probably don’t think your life needs changing. But God has a better plan for you, and I suspect your girlfriend knows it.

Finally, we need God for eternity. Someday, your life will be over, but what then? Christ came to give you a new life — right now, and forever. Don’t turn your back on Him any longer, but by faith receive Christ into your life today. His promise is for you: “Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” (John 16:24).

Don’t ignore Jesus Christ. Ask Him into your life today.
