Q:

I don't see why I need God in my life. It's up to me to get ahead in the world, and if I try hard enough I believe I can accomplish anything I want to with my life. I don't need God; I just need more self-discipline.

A:

I hope you won’t be offended by what I say, but did you notice how many times you used the little words “I” or “my” or “me” in your question? (I counted almost a dozen.) One reason we need God is to save us from ourselves–in other words, to keep us from getting so self-centered and wrapped up in ourselves that we can’t love others.

But another reason you need God is because eventually you’re going to face situations over which you have no control, and will find yourself helpless to do anything about them. A serious illness may strike. You may be in a bad accident, be forced to face a broken relationship, or experience a sudden disappointment in your career. Most of all, someday you will die–and enter eternity unprepared to face God. The Bible warns that “man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Don’t gamble with your soul by ignoring this reality!

The most important reason you need God, however, is because He loves you, and life’s greatest joy comes from knowing Him and discovering His plan for your life. You aren’t here by chance; God put you here. And He put you here for a reason: to know Him and to do His will.

Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). Don’t turn your back on God, but discover the joy of knowing Him by giving your life to Christ.
