Q:

Is it just me or is the world actually getting morally and spiritually worse? It seems like we've lost sight of moral values today, and we hardly know the difference between right and wrong. How did we get this way?

A:

Yes, our world does seem to have lost its way, both morally and spiritually. For example, behavior that wouldn’t have been mentioned in public a few generations ago is now so common that we don’t even think about it. We’ve become like the people of Jeremiah’s day: “Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush” (Jeremiah 8:12).

Why has this happened? The basic reason is that we have forgotten God and His will for our lives. God has told us how we should live, because He loves us and knows what is best for us. But when we turn our backs on Him and ignore His commandments, then we make up our own rules — and they will never lead us on the right path. When we put ourselves at the center of our lives instead of God, we end up in moral and spiritual chaos.

Our greatest need is to turn to God, both as individuals and as a society, rediscovering His Word, the Bible, and submitting ourselves to His authority. Is this possible? Yes, I believe it is — because it’s happened before. If we do not, God’s judgment may well fall on us.

Pray for our nation and our world. Pray too for our leaders, especially during this election year. Most of all, make sure of your own commitment to Christ. Then ask Him to help you live a life of purity and integrity, no matter what others do.
