Q:

Do you think we might be on the road to destroying the world? I'm very concerned about things like global warming and pollution, and I'm even thinking about a career in environmental science (I'm in high school right now).

A:

I’m not a scientist, of course—but I’ve talked with many scientists who share your concern, and I’m thankful for all those who are seeking to make our world a better and safer place. Perhaps God wants you to become one of them.

I believe Christians especially should be concerned about the environment—and the reason is because we know this is God’s world, not ours. God created it; it isn’t here by chance. And God put us here to be stewards or trustees of the world—to take care of it and use it responsibly. The Bible says that when God created the human race, He told them to “rule over … every living creature” (Genesis 1:28). Just as a good king takes care of his subjects, so we are to take care of the world.

Why haven’t we done this? Why are we so careless about the way we treat the world? The reason is because we’ve forgotten that this is God’s world. We act instead as if we are the center of the universe. Our lives are ruled by greed and selfishness, and we don’t care what happens to others or to the world.

Our greatest need is to have our hearts changed from within—and that can happen, as we yield our lives to Christ. If you have never done so, turn your life over to Christ and by faith ask Him to come into your heart. Then ask Him to guide you as you make decisions about your future. God loves you, and life’s greatest joy comes from knowing Him and living for His glory.
