Q:

I'm in a relationship that I know isn't right, but I don't know how to get out of it. I've prayed it would solve itself by him just deciding to leave, but he hasn't, and I don't think he ever will. It's too easy for him to just keep living off of me, I guess. How do I get off this dead-end road?

A:

The only way to get off of a dead-end road – is to get off of it! Wishing you were off of it doesn’t help, nor do half measures accomplish anything. Only decisive action will get you off of it, and hopefully onto the right road.

In other words, from what you say, this problem won’t solve itself; you must do what’s necessary to solve it. The only solution is to end this relationship – definitely and firmly. This may not be easy (particularly if this man is using you for his own selfish purposes), and you may need to get others involved to help you think it through, or even insure your own safety. But don’t let this keep you from doing what is right.

The real issue, however, is this: What place does God have in your life? He loves you, and He doesn’t want you to spend the rest of your life lurching from one bad situation to another. He wants you to know peace – peace in your heart, and peace in your relationships with other people. Only when we put Christ first and begin to follow Him can this become true.

Ask God to help you do what is right in this situation. Then turn to Christ and ask Him to come into your life. The Bible says, “Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble” (Psalm 119:165). Then get in a church where you can learn God’s Word and be encouraged by other believers.
