Q:

I was pretty wild when I was younger, but that was a long time ago and I've tried to live right since then. But how do I know if I'm good enough to get into heaven? I had a cancer scare a year ago, and for the first time it's made me think about God.

A:

Would you have ever thought about your relationship to God if you hadn’t had this health scare? Only you can answer this, of course — but I believe God spared you so you’d have another opportunity to give your life to Him. Don’t ignore it! The Bible says, “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

Listen: No matter how good we’ve been, we’ll never be good enough to go to heaven. The reason is because God’s standard is perfection — and none of us is perfect. God is absolutely pure and holy, and even one sin is an offense to Him. Even one sin will keep you out of heaven.

Is there any hope? Yes! The reason is because God has provided the way for our sins to be forgiven — and that way is Christ. He came into the world for one reason: to save us from our sins. He was without sin — but on the cross all our sins were placed on Him, and He took God’s judgment for us. The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Accept God’s gift of salvation by turning to Christ in repentance and faith, and committing your life to Him. Then thank Him that you will be with Him through all eternity.
