Q:

I have a hard time believing that God knows everything about every person on earth, even down to the smallest detail of our lives. Is this really true? I can barely keep track of my own children, let alone think about billions of people.

A:

One of the Bible’s greatest truths is that God knows all about every one of us – even things we don’t know about ourselves. The psalmist put it this way: “You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar … you are familiar with all my ways” (Psalm 139:2-3).

How is this possible – especially since our own knowledge is so limited? It’s possible for one reason: the greatness of God. We are limited – but He is not. We are finite – but He is not. We know very little – but He knows everything. We are imperfect – but He is perfect. If God could create the universe – right down to the smallest particle – couldn’t He also keep track of it? The Bible says, “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom” (Psalm 145:3).

Does the fact that God knows everything about you make you uncomfortable? It could – because it means He knows all about your sins and your failings. But it also should give you great comfort, because it means He cares about you and is concerned about what happens to you. God loves you! If He didn’t, He wouldn’t have sent His Son into the world to die for your sins.

Make sure of your relationship with God, by opening your heart and life to Jesus Christ. Then rejoice that you can bring every concern and every problem to Him in prayer. And rejoice too that some day you will go to be with Him through all eternity.
