Q:

I don't like what's happening to me. I have a secret addiction to porn on the Internet, and no matter how many resolutions I make I just can't seem to quit. Will God help me, or does He expect me to solve this on my own?

A:

No, God doesn’t expect you to solve this on your own. If you could solve it yourself you probably wouldn’t be writing me — but you can’t, and you need God’s help. And He wants to help you, because He loves you and doesn’t want you to be trapped by this destructive habit.

And don’t deceive yourself; it is destructive. It will destroy your self-esteem, and it also will fill your mind with images that crowd out everything that is pure and good. More than that, eventually this addiction will destroy your relationships, because it will flood your family with mistrust and anger and disgust once they discover it — as they inevitably will. The Bible’s words are true: “You may be sure that your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23). Most of all, it destroys your relationship with God, because it is a sin in His eyes.

What should you do? Begin by committing this problem — and your whole life — to Jesus Christ. Ask Him to come into your life to forgive you and cleanse you and give you a new goal in life — to honor God in all you do. Then ask Him to connect you to a church where Christ is preached and you can have fellowship with other believers.

Then take practical and decisive steps to overcome this habit. Install anti-porn filters on your computer; move it to where others can see it; have a friend you trust hold you accountable for your web surfing.

I am a Christian, saved by Grace however I have admitted to an internet porn addiction. I blamed this addiction for destroying my marriage and make no mistake it has but, I realize that had I followed the Lord and even attempted to live as He instructs much of my families pain and my pain caused by this addiction would have been spared because I would have been following Him and leading my family in a personal and family relationship with Him. So do not make the mistake of believing that you aren’t hurting anyone, you may not be at the moment but you will, all addicts hurt the ones they love and the ones that love them. Regardless of the addiction addicts hurt others. The Lord is at the front of my life now, and I walk with Him moment to moment, I pray to Him often. I pray he will restore what sin has destroyed and if He doesn’t I pray that He will instill peace in those I have caused pain through my addiction. I’m an internet porn addict and I will die as one but I now understand this addiction doesn’t define me, it doesn’t control me and it will not derail me from a successful life in Christ for the power of Jesus will help me to overcome and in the name of the Lord I will prevail over this addiction. Our God is greater than any addiction and He loves me and everyone else on planet earth.

I too have a porn addiction and had tried many times to quit on my own but could not. Its been about three months free of this terrible addiction not of my own doing but with God’s help and constant pray i know we can break free. Praise the Lord, through him only are all things possible.

The internet is a dangerous place and pray for all that struggle with this addiction.

S.K.,This is something you can hide from people but it slowly destroys your life, I know, it held me captive for 10 years, without anyone knowing. I wanted to stop and tried everything I could to. The only way I stopped is when I cried out because I was so sick of myself and Jesus set me free and gave me a new heart and made me a new man! Only Jesus can set you free.
