You may be right; sermons and messages on the second coming of Christ probably aren’t as common as they used to be, at least in some churches.

One reason may be because we tend to focus on our immediate spiritual needs. This isn’t necessarily wrong, of course; after all, God loves us, and He is concerned about our lives right now. I have never met a person who didn’t have problems and burdens of some type, and God wants to help us overcome them. Some of the most comforting words in the Bible are Jesus’ words to those who struggle with the burdens of life: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). This is Jesus’ invitation to you.

But when we become too preoccupied with the present and focus only on our immediate problems and needs, then we lose sight of God’s larger plan—and that is wrong. We aren’t the center of the universe—God is! And someday Christ will come again in power and glory, and all the sin and evil of this world will be swept away. As the Bible says, “in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13).

Yes, someday Christ will come again. This is God’s promise, and because of it we have hope of a better world. Are you ready for that day? You can be, by making your commitment to Christ.
