Q:

I'm a single parent, and by the time I get to the end of the week I'm just too tired to bother with church. I don't think people realize how hard it is to be a single parent.

A:

Almost no responsibility is harder than that of being a single parent—as you’ve discovered. I hope your letter will encourage people to reach out to single parents and do all they can to help them. The Bible tells us to “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

At the same time, I hope you’ll do everything you can to become part of a church family. Through them you can receive spiritual encouragement and strength, as you learn from God’s Word and discover the depth of God’s love for you. God has not abandoned you, and He wants to help you and give you hope for the future. Begin by turning to Jesus Christ and asking Him to come into your life, and then ask Him to guide you to a church where you’ll find help and hope.

But you also need to do this for the sake of your children. The world today is morally and spiritually confused, and your children need wise direction and guidance as they face the future. Don’t be content just to see that they’re fed and clothed (difficult as this may be for you). Do all you can to provide a strong spiritual foundation for their lives, both at home and through your church.

God knows all about the pressures you feel, and He wants to help you deal with them because He loves you. God’s promise is for you: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (Isaiah 40:29). God bless you.
