On the Horizon

In December 2009, My Hope travels to Thailand where only a half percent of the country's 60 million people belong to evangelical churches. Coming up in Spring 2010, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, two of the last remaining Latin American countries to carry out the My Hope project, will begin broadcasts.

What is My Hope? Launched in 2002, My Hope World Evangelism Through Television uses proven methods of evangelism and discipleship from more than 60 years of Crusade ministry to train believers around the world to open their homes and share their faith through Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) TV broadcasts and videos.

My Hope’s goal is to reach every country in the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ, and it has reached more than 44 countries to date. As a result, more than 9.4 million people worldwide have chosen to surrender their lives to Jesus Christ! My Hope image My Hope uses television, churches, and relationships between people to present a simple Gospel message to entire countries:
  • My Hope regional coordinators teach pastors throughout each country about the project.
  • Pastors train Christians in their churches to host others in their homes, inviting unsaved friends and family to watch the evangelistic national telecasts.
  • At the conclusion of the My Hope broadcasts, hosts share their personal testimonies and invite their guests to receive Jesus Christ as Savior.
More than 4.2 million Christians have served as hosts: They’ve been encouraged, trained, and given the opportunity to tell others about the change Christ has made in their lives. My Hope image Each person who makes a decision in a home through My Hope fills out a response card, and under the leadership of a local pastor, receives encouragement and discipleship through the same host home.

Through pastors and home groups, those who make decisions for Christ during My Hope are easily integrated into local churches.

My Hope’s special programs feature culturally appropriate testimonies and music, and each program is presented in the local languages. In each country that it serves, My Hope aims to involve at least 55% of the churches. Altogether, more than 260,000 churches worldwide have participated in My Hope. My Hope history

Thailand

BGEA’s My Hope Thailand project was launched in May at the 7th annual Congress on Evangelism in Bangkok. Over 3,500 Christian leaders representing all 76 provinces of the country attended the launch meeting. Hundreds of churches signed up to participate in My Hope today and many more are expected to join as the 7th Congress on Evangelism continues. One half of one percent of Thailand’s 60 million people belongs to evangelical churches. A goal of this country’s evangelical Christian community is to expose all 80,000 villages of Thailand to the Gospel by the year 2010. BGEA has a target of December 2009 to broadcast My Hope programs into thousands of homes in Thailand.

Puerto Rico

Representatives from BGEA and key leaders of major Christian denominations in Puerto Rico met last week to launch a partnership to share the Gospel through the My Hope World Television Project. BGEA has a target of April 2010 to broadcast My Hope programs into thousands of homes, where relationship evangelism will take place. Organizational, promotional and training activities are planned from now until then. Puerto Rico is one of the last Latin American regions to carry out the My Hope project. To date, My Hope has been greatly blessed by God in 17 Latin American nations, with over 3 million decisions for Christ.

Dominican Republic

The My Hope World Television Project launched in the Dominican Republic in April. Approximately 320 pastors, key denominational leaders and parachurch group members formally invited the BGEA to conduct the My Hope project in their country at the largest launch meeting in the history of this project. BGEA has a target of March 2010 to broadcast My Hope programs into thousands of Dominican homes, where friendship evangelism will take place. Massive organizational, promotional and training activities will take place from now until then. The Dominican Republic is one of the last Latin American regions to conduct the My Hope project. To date, My Hope has been greatly blessed by God in 17 Latin American nations, with over 3 million decisions for Christ in the continent.

2008 In 2008, My Hope has worked in more than a dozen sensitive countries of the world and completed nationwide outreaches in both Brazil and Singapore. 2007 My Hope Uruguay programs aired in over 14,000 homes on September 27–29, 2007. We rejoice that more than 33,000 people devoted their lives to Jesus Christ as a result. Read more »

In January and February 2007, 10,459 churches were involved in the second phase of My Hope Mexico, which used DVDs of the December broadcasts in video projections all around the country, through which over 67,000 people made decisions for Christ. 2006 Throughout India, the Philippines, and Mexico, millions of people united to view My Hope broadcasts in 2006.

When Christians are baptized in India, they are fined approximately ten months of pay. Despite these challenges, My Hope aired in India twice in 2006. With more than one billion people, India has one of the largest TV audiences in the world. The combined My Hope India broadcasts were shown in 14 languages and transmitted to all 28 states of India, resulting in more than 2.7 million decisions for Christ.

My Hope Mexico’s television broadcast in November 2006 was problem-free, but the My Hope call center found difficulties as 7,500 people called during the first half hour of the broadcast. The computers subsequently broke down because of the unexpectedly large volume of calls. After repair, the call center received four calls per second. My Hope image In Mexico, more than 20,000 churches were involved in training pastors and laypeople for this broadcast. With an average of 12 homes per church and 10 viewers per home, more than 2.4 million people viewed the My Hope Mexico broadcast, and more than 479,000 came to faith in Christ.

My Hope was aired in the Philippines twice in December 2006. Earlier in February of 2006, many in the Philippines became followers of Christ at the Metro Manila Franklin Graham Festival, and countless new believers from the Festival were able to bear fruit for the kingdom as they prayed for and invited friends to view the My Hope broadcasts.

More than 21,000 churches and 115,000 homes were involved in preparation for these broadcasts, and more than 563,000 people made a life-changing decision to follow Jesus Christ as a result. 2005 Working through the local churches, BGEA brought the Gospel to unbelievers in Argentina, Belarus, Chile, Guatemala, India, Moldova, and Peru. In 2005, 1,383,174 trained Christians, representing 88,587 churches, opened their homes to their friends, relatives and neighbors to share the simple message of God’s love and redemption.

The largest and most complex country reached in 2005 was India, where BGEA used 14 languages to reach out to more than 1 billion people. The Christian church there, while only a small percentage (2.3%) of the total population, is still sizeable (2.5 million). It required bold vision—both on the part of BGEA and local pastors—to train and mobilize such a considerable group.

Indian believers rose to the challenge! Christmas week, more than 768,000 homes all across India opened their doors to invite people in for TV broadcasts with the message of Christ. Through My Hope in 2005, 3.3 million people reported making a decision for Christ. 2004 Christians in Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador took on the challenge of reaching their nations for Christ through My Hope in 2004, while a second phase of the “There Is Hope” Project took place in Russia. My Hope image In Bolivia, the programs were dubbed into the indigenous languages of Quechua and Aymara, as well as Spanish. Our Aymara Language Coordinator said he invited seven people to his home to watch the telecast. Only one of those he invited came—a 75-year-old lady—but she brought 15 members of her family along. All of them accepted salvation immediately! The oldest ones said that they were just waiting for someone to share the Gospel with them, and now that they have met Jesus, they want discipleship.

Through My Hope in each of these four countries and the 15,840 churches that participated, more than 1 million people reported making a commitment to Christ in 2004! 2003 In 2003, My Hope expanded to Panama, Paraguay, and Venezuela, as well as Russia. In these countries, 10,888 churches—in capital cities and rural towns—trained and mobilized over 226,000 members to share the Gospel through television house parties. This resulted in 402,000 decisions for Christ—more than double the decisions from 2002.

In Russia, the project (locally called Nadezhda est, or “There Is Hope”) was set up differently because of the country’s large size and population (145 million people spread across 11 time zones).

The project was a broad media outreach designed to use television broadcasts as well as radio, newspapers and magazines, the Internet, theater showings, and video parties to proclaim the Good News and provide local Christians the opportunity to share their testimonies. 2002 My Hope (Mi Esperanza in Spanish) was launched in 2002 in four Latin American countries—Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador—with the aim to extend it to every country around the world. As a result of the projects in 2002, more than 196,900 people made decisions for Christ.

One pastor said, “Over 500 people made professions of faith in my church, others recommitted their lives to Christ, and attendance has now increased with 1,800 new people coming since the Mi Esperanza project in Honduras.”
