A Story Worth Telling

A Story Worth Telling

One of the best ways to build a bridge to someone who does not have a relationship with Christ is through your personal testimony. This is basically your story of how you came to Jesus Christ. The wonderful thing about your testimony is that even if you are relatively young in the faith, you can still talk about what God has done for you personally.

Consider the blind man who was miraculously healed by Jesus. He was being cross-examined by the religious authorities on the fine points of theology when he gave this classic response: “One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” (John 9:25, NIV).

That explanation is a lot more than most people in this world know today. Though people may disagree with what you believe, they cannot deny what actually happened to you.

It is interesting to note how often the Apostle Paul used his personal testimony when sharing the Gospel. You would think that this man of brilliant intellect–a man trained in the great knowledge of his day and possessing a tremendous grasp and understanding of Scripture–would lean upon his extensive knowledge and oratorical skills when telling others about the Gospel. Yet more often than not, when standing before Roman governors and leaders, Paul would begin by telling the story of how he came to know Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord.

Although Paul often used his personal testimony of how he came to Christ, he always made a beeline to the Cross. He always came back to the message of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection.

Paul gives a simple summation of the Gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4:

“Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (NIV).

Embed that thought deep into your mind. The Gospel in a nutshell is that Christ died for our sins, that He was buried and that He was raised on the third day.
That’s what Christ did for all of us. Tell that story–and tell the story of what Jesus did for you. That’s a story that only you can tell.
